[N8VEM-S100:7723] TO-3 footprint needed

Good morning group,

I have been searching now for œ hour and cannot find a footprint in the
KiCAD v4 library for a TO-3 case semiconductor (typical LM323K).

Is it actually there, and I keep missing it? If so, please point it out to
me.

If it isn’t there, do you have a footprint for TO-3 that you would be
willing to share?

Also, a few days ago I posted a message in regards to an S-100 edge fingers
footprint (not the edge connector, but the component that creates the edge
fingers on the board).

I got one response, but it didn’t work. Is there anyone else with a
confirmed functional S-100 edge fingers footprint they would be willing to
share?

Thanks for your help!

You might want to ask John for his foot print that uses TO-3 plus a
switching regulator board

Hi Bob,

you can obtain any module footprints you need from an existing design.
Go to the S100 Computers website and download the KiCad design files for
the CF/IDE V3 board (for example) and unpack them to a folder.
Open the design in Kicad and then open PCBnew to view the board.

From here you can export a footprint to an existing library or to a
standalone file by :-

1) right click desired component footprint and select > component footprint
Edit with ModEdit, (this will open the module editor)
2) if you have your own footprint library then open the 'current library'
from the file menu and then save the displayed module in this library by
clicking the button for
save module in active library.
3) If you don't have your own library then you can just export the
component footprint (module) to a .mod file by clicking on the 'export
module' button on the toolbar.

Note:-
you will need to move the .mod file to your target project folder and add
the module file (.mod) to the list of footprint libraries in PCBNew via the
Preferences > Library option.
One this is done then the footprint should then appear in the CVPcb list
where you associate a schematic symbol with a PCB module.

If the above is not clear then give me a shout, but the best way to pick
this stuff up is by playing around with ModEdit and Component Library
editor (In EESchema)

regards

David Fry

btw. Johns multi regulator footprint is 2 or 3 footprints stacked on top
one another as they are multiple components in EESchema

The KICAD .zip file contains a footprint for a LM323 (a TO-3 5V regulator). These days I overlay a TO-3 on top of a Pololu regulator. No extra space, more options.

I sent you a link yesterday for the S100 connector.

Thanks again, John.

It was suggested by others that I pull the TO-3 footprint from another project, like those on the N8VEM-S100 web site. I’ll look into that, especially the link you provided below. I want to do exactly what I have seen you do, that is include the Pololu regulator stacked on top of a TO-3 regulator. Further, I found another 5V switching regulator from EZSBC called the PSU5, and LM323K replacement. (http://www.ezsbc.com/index.php/featured-products-list-home-page/psu5.html#.VgK07Jce3s5). This gives me three regulator options: Standard LM323K, EZSBC PSU5 (fits in the TO-3 space, but without a heatsink) and the Pololu part. I am looking for the TO-3 footprint only because I don’t have good mechanicals on the TO-3 part in order to make my own.

BTW, the link to the S-100 appears to only have 62 pins, and they are on 0.1” centers, not 0.125”.

Yes I have used the EZSBC Bob, (see http://s100computers.com/My%20System%20Pages/MSDOS%20Board/MSDOS%20Board.htm ). I have found them excellent though sometimes you have to tweak the onboard pot to get 5V’s under load. Intrinsically I just don’t like adjustment pots. Note the footprint is slightly off from the KiCAD TO-3. I raise the unit with a washer from the board and bend the pins slightly. Take care they are delicate – boke one!

As Dave suggested I think the above page .zip file also contains the correct S100 bus connector/footprint.

Frankly my KiCAD folders are a mess right now. I have been holding out for the new version of KiCAD to be released which has a different library interface and kind of get everything in one spot at that time. That said. if you don’t get the correct footprint for the S100 connector from the above page let me know.

Good luck John

Yes, John, the 386 board files you linked me too were just the ticket.  I did not know I could pull footprints from board files. I was able to get both the TO-3 and the S-100 footprints. Also, I found mechanicals for the TO-3 in an old data book and the locations of the pins in your footprint are off enough to cause the problem you describe. I have tweaked the locations to match and confirmed with empirical measurements on a real LM323K. Is there a way to upload my TO-3 somewhere so everyone can use it?
